I am a nephrologist. I read the literature. I run clinical protocols. I measure GFR and creatinine and BUN.
I am also a student of Sanatana Dharma. I understand that the ancient sages who described Prana — the life force that animates the body — were not speaking metaphor. They were describing biology in the language available to them.
And I am also a Life In Yoga trained Yoga Therapist.
And when I read the modern literature on vagal activation, heart rate variability, autonomic regulation of the renin-angiotensin system, and circadian control of stem cell activity — I recognized what they were describing. They described it better, in some ways, than our molecular biology does.
Pranayama — the yogic science of breath regulation — is, in my clinical practice, one of the most powerful adjunctive tools I have for CKD management.
The mechanism is primarily autonomic nervous system activation . Slow diaphragmatic breathing at 5-6 cycles per minute — resonance frequency breathing — produces maximum heart rate variability, indicating optimal vagal tone. Vagal tone suppresses sympathetic renal nerve activity, the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, and systemic inflammatory cytokine production simultaneously.
For CKD patients, this means: lower blood pressure, less glomerulosclerosis-driving angiotensin II activity, less tubulointerstitial inflammation, and — critically — a reduction in the chronic cortisol elevation that drives kidney fibrosis.
Bhramari pranayama (humming bee breath) is my first prescription for every CKD patient I see who has not explored breath practices. Five minutes of Bhramari produces measurable reductions in systolic blood pressure and salivary cortisol. It is free, it has no side effects, it cannot worsen kidney function, and its benefits are cumulative with consistent practice.
Yoga asana practice adds mechanical benefits: improved organ perfusion through sequential compression and release, lymphatic stimulation, venous return improvement from gentle inversions.
And breathwork is a
REGENEROS activator. The circadian rhythms that govern stem cell activity are autonomically regulated. Consistent pranayama practice synchronizes the autonomic clock and creates the physiological conditions — low cortisol, high vagal tone, anti-inflammatory environment — in which
REGENEROS can operate at full capacity.
The ancient sages knew. The modern laboratory is now confirming their recommendations. Breathe. Your kidneys are listening.
… You Are Not the Weight
Take a breath right now. You came to this page carrying something heavy — a number, a fear, a person you love. I see that weight, and I am not asking you to put it down. I am asking you to remember that you are not the weight. You are the one who has carried it this far. That strength is not gone. We are going to use it, together.
A PERSONAL NOTE FROM DR. PRIYA
If you would like to begin a pranayama practice and want to know which techniques are safe and most beneficial for your specific stage of CKD — write to me at care@kidneyrelief.life. I answer every email myself. Your breath is medicine. Let me teach you how to use it.
